Four weeks ago, our family got a little bigger.
My daughter and her husband welcomed their third child — a beautiful baby girl.
Over the years, I have photographed hundreds of children, including my four wonderful grandsons. I have documented first steps, childhood adventures, and the little moments families never want to forget.
But this session felt different from the moment I picked up my camera.
Because this time, I wasn't just the professional photographer.
I was Nanny — capturing the beginning of a new chapter for my granddaughter and her two big brothers.
People often ask what it takes to create beautiful photographs when toddlers and newborns are involved.
The truth is, you don't ask little ones to pose perfectly or hold still. You create a space where something real can happen.
A soft bed. Beautiful light. A brand-new baby sister.
Then you step back.
What happened next belonged completely to them.
Their little sister rested between them as two very active big brothers slowed down for just one minute and leaned closer, smiling down at their baby sister. They touched her fingers, watched her sleep for just a moment, then off they went.
Neither boy looked at my camera once.
And I wouldn't have wanted them to.
Because the most meaningful photographs aren't about perfection. They are about connection — the quiet moments children create while they are simply loving each other.
Even if only for a moment.
Earlier that morning, we spent some quiet time outdoors. The outdoors was peaceful, the light soft and gentle. The baby asleep on the small purple blanket.
Just a quiet place to rest.
Some of my favorite images from the day were the simplest ones.
As we photographed my granddaughter outdoors, their Newfoundland wandered over and settled into the grass beside her as if he already knew she was someone to protect.
Calm. Watchful. Gentle.
No one asked him to stay there.
He simply chose to.
Not direction. Not prompting.
Just capturing the moment.
The moment a mother looks down at her beautiful baby daughter with love — the same way mothers have looked at their babies for generations.
Some photographs are created.
Others are simply witnessed.
And then there are the rare ones that capture a love so deep, it becomes a memory that lasts forever.
This is the photograph my granddaughter will someday treasure most.
Dad was missing from this particular morning — work kept him away — but this little girl has a lifetime of sessions ahead of her with her father. This was simply the first chapter.
When I look through these images, I don't just see portraits.
I see a little girl who was deeply loved before she ever entered this world.
I see the beginning of a story that is only just starting to be written.
Welcome to the world, sweet girl.
