Behind Every Portrait Is a Story

One of my favorite things about photographing children is that they remind us life isn't meant to be perfectly posed.

These photographs were taken during our family vacation along the beautiful coastline of Nova Scotia. The little boy in the yellow raincoat is my two year old grandson.

He wanted to explore the beach.

He wanted to splash in the water.

He definitely didn't want to stop long enough to put on his rain hat.

So his mom did what moms do.

She laughed.

She chased.

She tried one more time.

I couldn't resist photographing that moment because that's part of the story too.

A few minutes later, the hat was finally on, he'd forgotten all about the chase and I was able to capture these moments.

When parents look at the artwork I create, they often imagine children standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera. They quietly think to themselves, "My child would never sit still for that."

The truth is, the magic usually happens somewhere between the running and the giggles.

That day, all I had was a little yellow raincoat, a curious two-year-old grandson, and the beautiful Nova Scotia coastline.

He created the magic.

Tiny adventures.

Bare feet in the sand.

His mother chasing him across the beach to put on his hat.

One day he may not remember this vacation, but one of these portraits will hang in his family's home. Every time they look at it, they'll smile and tell the story of the little boy who didn't want to wear his hat.

That's why I love photographing children — this same kind of real, unscripted magic is what I bring home to families in Mars, Cranberry Township, and Butler County.
