A weekend at Nanny's with Mars Area Photographer

From Dream to Storybook: A Weekend With My Grandson

Fifteen years ago, I had a dream.

I wanted to learn how to take amazing pictures—because I was about to become a grandma for the very first time. I didn’t want quick snapshots, I wanted magic. I wanted portraits that told a story, that captured the wonder of childhood in a way that would last long after the toys were put away.

Fast forward to today—and that dream has taken root and grown into something more beautiful than I could have imagined.

Now, not only am I a Nanny to four amazing boys, I’m also a Master Photographer who specializes in children’s photography.

This weekend, my two-year-old grandson came to stay. What began as simple playtime soon turned into a wonderful adventure. Because when your Nanny is a children’s photographer, playtime means more than just toys—it means vintage airplanes ready to take flight, wooden firetrucks getting stuck in muddy puddles, ladders that lead straight to dreams, and a rusty old car waiting like a hidden treasure in the field. Every prop I’ve collected over the years suddenly became part of his story.

I didn’t plan a photoshoot

I just dressed my toddler grandson in clothes that I knew would photograph beautifully, waited for the right time of day, and followed him outside to play. That’s the secret: I didn’t direct the session—I simply followed his imagination. Playtime has a way of turning into storybook magic.
Tip of the Day: He was outside nearly all day, but I only brought my camera out during the early morning and again in the evening—when the light is soft, golden, and perfect for portraits. You don’t need to photograph everything—just be ready when the light (and the moment) is right.

This weekend reminded me why I started all those years ago: not just to take beautiful photos, but to preserve moments that matter. Every one of these final images were moments my grandson created.  He had me bring out all my vintage props so he could play with them outside or he would ask to go see the broken car in the field.

You can see some of the highlights from our weekend below. I hope they bring a smile—and maybe even a little inspiration to let your child’s imagination lead the way.

With love,
Marsha
