Thank Heaven for Little Boys

I receive inquiries about portraits of little girls all the time.

Little boys? Not nearly as often.

The comment I hear most often from mothers is, "My boys would never sit still for pictures."

My answer is always the same: "No problem. They don't have to."

As a professional photographer near Mars and Cranberry Township, PA, I know that little boys are not interested in sitting still and smiling simply because we ask them to. They want to move, explore and discover. They want to know where the path leads, what is hiding beside the creek and whether a nearby stick would make a good sword.

That is not something I need to correct before creating his portrait. It is something I can use.

Sometimes all it takes is a toy airplane, an old-fashioned fishing pole, a wagon or a choice about where we should explore first. His imagination takes over, he forgets about the camera and I begin seeing the personality his family knows so well.

These little guys do not need to sit perfectly still to create beautiful portraits. They simply need to be themselves.

Sometimes Things Don’t Go as Planned

Sometimes a portrait session does not begin quite the way we imagined.

This little guy became overwhelmed and wanted his mom. And that was okay.

We did not rush him or try to force a smile. Mom stayed close, we gave him the time he needed and then we found something he wanted to do.

Before long, he was standing in the creek, pouring water from a little blue pitcher and completely caught up in his own adventure. The little boy who wanted his mom at the beginning of the session did not want to go home when it was over.

That is why I never decide how a session is going to go based on the first few minutes. Sometimes a child simply needs a little time, a different activity or the reassurance of knowing that Mom is nearby.

Once he feels comfortable, everything can change.

He forgets about the camera, his real personality begins to appear and his portraits start telling his
