While we were vacationing in Sarasota, my daughter told me she wanted to do a family session on the beach.
Of course, I immediately began picturing how wonderful it would look—she and her husband walking along the shoreline with their two adorable little boys, holding hands, laughing, and cradling their three-month-old baby girl. Everything coming together beautifully.
Then I stopped and remembered something.
This was my daughter’s family.
The boys were four and two, and they were very used to having Nanny follow them around with a camera. The moment they see me with my camera, I’m pretty sure they think, “Game on,” and do everything possible not to cooperate.
So, before we walked onto the beach, I gave my son-in-law a fair warning.
“I’m going into this with very low expectations.”
He agreed that low expectations placed the bar at exactly the right level.
Still, I tried.
I asked the boys if they could walk beside their mom and dad so Nanny could take a picture. Before I could even raise my camera, everything began to fall apart.
Apparently, even my very low bar for expectations was still too high.
But that is when the real magic began to happen.
The two-year-old decided the ocean was far more interesting than anything Nanny was trying to do and ran straight into the water.
Meanwhile, the four-year-old discovered a monster truck that had fallen into the sand before he was supposed to see it.
Once the truck was discovered and the two-year-old was in the Gulf of Mexico, there was no getting our original plan back.
So, we changed the plan.
When the two year old ran off to play in the water, they joined him. Everyone stopped worrying about where to stand, where to look or what they were supposed to be doing.
They simply played, laughed and went with it.
And I photographed everything as it happened.
Instead of asking the boys to walk nicely, my daughter and son-in-law swung them between them.
The session looked nothing like the one I had imagined before we walked onto the beach. It was a little wet, a little wild and completely unpredictable—but it was also real. It captured the boys exactly as they were at four and two, their baby sister tucked safely in the middle of it all, and two parents who chose to laugh and join the fun instead of becoming frustrated.
Somehow, the family session I began with very low expectations became one of my favorites.
As a family photographer near Mars and Cranberry Township, I usually photograph families throughout the Pittsburgh area—but this session took us all the way to the beautiful beaches of Sarasota.
If you worry that your children will not cooperate during a family session, please don’t. Children rarely care about the plans we have carefully made for them. We will simply change the plan, follow their lead and photograph the wonderfully real moments that happen instead.
Sometimes, those are the photographs you end up loving most.
