Two-year-old toddlers are some of the most rewarding subjects for my portrait sessions. While they often start with a few tears, unsure if this is something they want to do, it’s heartwarming to see those tears transform into smiles and laughter as they begin to enjoy the session so much that they don’t want to stop playing.
In this particular session, we began on a charming country pathway. This little boy started crying because his mother had sat him down on the ground near a buggy full of little bears. It was this moment that created a portrait that tells a story—a story captured in a single frame. The portrait reveals a tiny boy with tear-streaked cheeks, surrounded by a buggy full of teddy bears. You can't help but look at the picture and wonder what made him cry, inviting you into a narrative of innocence and discovery. This final image is more than just a photograph; it's a timeless story of a child's world, full of emotions and wonder.
After the buggy and bears, we switched to a little red bike, and the tears vanished. This small red bike became the perfect prop for creating another captivating portrait, telling a unique story of a little boy. Where was he headed on his tiny bike, and why did he turn around? Was he checking to see if someone was following him, or did someone call his name? This single picture holds the answer, depending on how you view it. This beautiful piece of art captures a two-year-old boy at play, frozen in a moment of pure childhood wonder and curiosity.
Our next location for this session was the creek! This little guy absolutely adored the water and would have played there all evening if he could. The first portrait captures a magical moment: a little boy in a small homemade boat crafted from an old galvanized wash tub, complete with a charming patchwork sail. Where is he heading? What adventures await him on his journey? The binoculars clutched in his hands add an intriguing element to the story, inviting us to wonder what he sees on the horizon. His little yellow raincoat, vibrant against the natural backdrop, adds a touch of whimsy and innocence, perfectly capturing the spirit of childhood exploration and curiosity.
For this last set of images, I handed this little boy an old pitcher, which sparked pure joy and creativity in him. As he eagerly filled the pitcher with water and poured it out repeatedly, the moments he created were nothing short of magical. He absolutely loved this pitcher, filling it up with water and pouring it out so many times I lost count. This was the perfect ending for the session because, by the time he was done, he was completely soaked.
When it was time to go home, there were tears—not because he was upset, but because he wanted to stay and continue his adventure. This pitcher became more than just a prop; it became a toy that offered endless fun and wonder, capturing the essence of childhood in every splash and giggle.
