How Simple Props Help Create Meaningful Storytelling Portraits

There’s something magical about simplicity.

In this studio session, we didn’t rely on elaborate sets or overwhelming details. Instead, we chose a few carefully selected props — a rocking horse, a stack of vintage books, a well-loved teddy bear, and a softly glowing lamp.

And that was more than enough.

The Rocking Horse: A Childhood Classic

The rocking horse instantly evokes nostalgia. It’s playful, but it also carries history — a symbol of simpler days and imaginative adventures. As she gently held the wooden horse, it felt as though she was pausing mid-story, somewhere between reality and make-believe.

The Books: Layers of Story

Stacked beneath her teddy bear, the vintage books added depth — literally and emotionally. Books represent a little girl that loves to read. They ground the portrait in warmth and tradition, creating the kind of timeless feeling families love in fine art children’s studio portraits.

 

The Lamp: Mood and Emotion

The soft glow of the lamp transformed the above image into something special. It created a quiet evening scene — a little girl lost in a book, wrapped in warmth and imagination.

Lighting is one of the most powerful storytelling tools in fine art studio photography. Even the simplest prop can completely shape the emotion of a portrait, adding depth, atmosphere, and a sense of nostalgia.

Including something familiar gives a child comfort in front of the camera — and that comfort translates into authentic expression. In my custom children’s portrait sessions, I always encourage incorporating meaningful items that help children feel secure and relaxed.
