My Experience at Iwona Podlasinska's Children Photography Workshop

Embracing the Magic of Childhood

Every year, I make it a priority to continue my journey in Fine Art Photography, not just to hone my skills, but to ensure I offer my clients the very best. Recently, that journey took me to Canada for an extraordinary Children’s Photography Workshop with none other than Iwona Podlasinska—a photographer whose work has captivated and inspired me for years.

The workshop was everything I had hoped for and more. From the moment we started, Iwona immersed us in the art of portrait photography, covering everything from fine-tuning camera settings to mastering composition and color theory. She emphasized the importance of choosing locations that enhance the story we’re trying to tell, and, of course, the magic of light. As someone who has been behind the camera for years, I was pleasantly surprised by how many new tricks I picked up—and how many small details I had overlooked or forgotten. It was a refreshing blend of learning and rediscovery.

What truly set this experience apart was the second half of day one: photographing everyday children in natural settings. These weren’t professional models with rehearsed smiles, but regular kids who weren’t always eager to have their picture taken. That authenticity made the session even more magical. We weren’t forcing poses or rushing the children; instead, we waited for natural moments to unfold. The golden hour—about an hour before sunset—bathed everything in that warm, soft glow that’s impossible to replicate in any studio. It was a dream.

We had the opportunity to shoot at two different locations, each with its own unique atmosphere. The first location was a museum that had a rustic, nostalgic charm, adding a timeless feel to the portraits. The weathered textures and vintage details created the perfect backdrop for capturing the innocence of childhood.

"The second location was a breathtaking park where we photographed children fishing in the creek and playing along the winding pathways. An adorable little dog kept them company, bringing even more charm to the session. The golden hour—about an hour before sunset—bathed everything in that warm, soft glow that’s impossible to replicate in any studio. It was a dream.

Despite having eight photographers circling them, the children were incredibly patient. Watching them through the lens, as they played, explored, or simply stood still, I could already sense I was capturing something special. Just glancing at the back of my camera gave me a thrill; I knew the images would be breathtaking.

Day two was dedicated to editing, where we transformed those golden hour moments into finished pieces of art. I left the workshop not just with a handful of beautiful images, but with a renewed sense of inspiration—eager to bring these new insights into my sessions and offer something even more special to my clients.

This workshop with Iwona Podlasinska reminded me of the power of simplicity, patience, and, most importantly, the beauty of letting children be themselves. The experience was a perfect reminder of why I fell in love with Fine Art Photography in the first place.

For photographers just starting out on this incredible journey, or for those who, like me, love to keep learning and stay inspired, I would highly recommend Iwona Podlasinska’s workshop. It’s a rare opportunity to learn from one of the best children’s photographers in the world—an experience that will ignite your creativity and elevate your craft.
