How a Children's Photographer Uses AI to Create Storybook Art

When AI Sparked a Little Fall Fairy Magic

How I Use AI to Enhance Fine Art Children's Portraits and Storytelling

AI is everywhere in photography these days. Some embrace it, some avoid it, and many are still deciding where it fits. As a fine art children's photographer near Mars, Cranberry Township and Wexford PA, I see it as a creative tool—one that can inspire ideas and help refine small elements in a portrait—but it never replaces the artistry, planning, or the magic of capturing real children in real moments. Every portrait I create begins with real children, thoughtful lighting, beautiful wardrobe, and carefully crafted studio and outdoor experiences. AI simply helps me enhance the storytelling and polish the vision I’ve already captured.

While working on my Fairy for All Seasons series, I envisioned a Fall Fairy in a beautiful Ella Dynae gown, twirling through a magical autumn world filled with soft leaves and storybook light. I wanted this to be a studio portrait, crafted by hand, with every detail thoughtfully styled and photographed.

While seeking inspiration, I came across an AI-generated fairy image that sparked my imagination. Sometimes all it takes is a little spark to set the creative wheels in motion—and from that point, my own vision and creativity took over.

How I Actually Use AI in My Artwork

Fall Fairy – Expanding the Environment

For my Fall Fairy portrait, I used AI the same way I have always used stock images or my own scenic photography—to explore options for fairy wings, leaves, and small background details. It simply gave me more choices to help expand the magical world I was already creating.

The most important part of the portrait was always real—the child, the location, the posing, the laughter, and the experience of becoming a fairy. I didn't place her into an artificial scene. Instead, I built the environment around her one artistic element at a time, adding soft leaves, gentle textures, and touches of nature to create depth.

This was not a quick edit. This single portrait took several hours to complete. AI is simply one of many tools I use in Photoshop to refine my vision and create the signature storybook artwork my clients know me for.

Children's Portraits – Strengthening the Story

Sisters Portrait – Adding One Small Detail

In another portrait of two little sisters, I wanted the image to feel like a quiet moment inside a bedroom. I loved the portrait exactly as I photographed it, but by adding a simple window where the light naturally fell across their hair, the image suddenly felt more complete—like a real lived-in space instead of a studio setup.

The girls, the connection, the lighting, and the emotion were always real. AI simply helped me finish the story I was already telling.

Childhood Portrait – Completing the Story

In this portrait, the cutest little girl sat on a beautiful antique bed while playing with her mother's jewelry. The moment already felt timeless, but adding a soft window element helped it feel even more like a quiet childhood memory happening in her own room.

Nothing about the child or the moment changed. AI simply helped strengthen the feeling of the environment around her.

Winnie the Pooh Portrait – Safe Creative Editing

A recent Winnie the Pooh inspired portrait is another example. I found the perfect outfit, styled a honey jar scene, and photographed a toddler reaching inside. Of course, real honey would have been messy and uncomfortable, so I used a few Cheerios as a safe substitute during the session.

Later during editing, I used AI to add the dripping honey effect. That small detail helped complete the story while keeping the session clean, safe, and fun for the child.

AI as a Tool, Not a Shortcut

To me, AI does not replace the camera, the lighting, the wardrobe, or—most importantly—the experience.

The little girl who dreamed of being a fairy still had the joy of twirling in a designer gown. The sisters still shared real giggles together. The little girl with the jewelry still played and explored while creating memories her family will treasure.

AI cannot create those moments. It cannot create emotion, connection, or experience.

What it can do is help me refine the artistic world around those real moments.

Just like painters use brushes and digital artists use tablets, I use every tool available to create the most beautiful artwork possible for my clients. AI is not a shortcut. It is simply one more creative tool that helps me bring my artistic vision to life.

The magic still comes from the child.
The vision still comes from the artist.
AI simply helps refine the final brushstrokes.
